The Carterton Youth Council joined forces with our Elected Members last night for a first-hand experience of participating in a Council meeting.
Each year, Carterton District Council holds one of its Ordinary Council Meetings at 4:30pm to encourage its Youth Council to attend as part of the Council’s strategy to enhance the mana of rangatahi. This gives them the opportunity to grow, develop and reach their full potential.
While developing the strategy last year, our rangatahi expressed the need to participate in community and council affairs as a way to be counted, and have their views respected and considered regardless of their age.
Prior to the meeting, the Youth Council had an informal catch up with the Elected Members. They gave feedback on the opportunities and challenges they think the community face of digesting the content of our meeting agendas, and how to make the information more appealing and accessible to allow residents to feel inspired to engage with Council.
They also put Council staff to the test, with technical questions about how our wastewater is processed, as well as expressing their thoughts on wanting more community projects included in the Long Term Plan.
The Youth Council then joined the Ordinary Council Meeting, giving their views on the Draft Long Term Plan, and arranging to give more feedback on the LTP via a formal submission once consultation opens. They also invited Elected Members to attend their next Youth Council Meeting in April.
Some of the suggestions the Youth Council made to the Draft Consultation Document, such as giving the community an indication of the lifespan of our two different wastewater project options, will be included in the final draft that goes out to residents for consultation.
Community Development Team Leader Becks Clarke said she was inspired by the interaction between the Elected Members and rangatahi, and was excited to see more engagement between the two groups.
“Our rangatahi are so switched on and look at things through a different lens, giving us insight into things we may not have considered,” Becks said.
“They are such an inspiring and intelligent bunch, proving that age is no barrier to participating in Council processes and that anyone can make a difference in their community.”
